European Studies

General

In this extra-curricular course, pupils investigate what being European means. The course aims to give pupils a clearer idea of how the world really works and what place Europe and young Europeans have in it.

European Studies meets once a week for a double period and is taught in English. Activities include media-analysis, resolution drafting and debate.

Some recent debate topics:

  • “This house believes that socialism has so far failed as an ideological model for government.”
  • “This house believes that 500 years of Western predominance is now at an end.”

Every year, pupils are selected from this course on the basis of merit to attend the National Model European Parliament as delegates. In special cases, they may go on to represent Austria as delegates at European level. Extensive preparation is provided.

Highlights from recent years

National Session of the MEP 2016

BG/BRG Klosterneuburg was the proud host of the 2016 National Session of the Model European Parliament from 22nd to 24th January. Committee work was in the following areas: Civil Liberties, Gender Equality, Employment and Social affairs; the results of their work can be read here. MEP Vienna 2014

For the first time since 2000, Austria had the pleasure of hosting the Model European Parliament. This came as a special honor as 2014 was a momentous year: the centenary of the outbreak of WWI, European Parliamentary elections, and the Fall of the Berlin Wall one quarter of a century ago.

The MEP Vienna 2014 session not only aimed to embrace the opportunity to reflect on the past but also hoped to send out a strong message from Europe’s youth from Vienna, the peace capital.

MEP also celebrated the twentieth anniversary of its foundation. For this occasion, we staged an MEP re-union weekend, inviting former participants to come to see the GA and attend a traditional Viennese Ball and to enjoy some socialising events.
