Should my child be applying for the Bilingual Programme or for the IB Programme?
Your child should be applying for the Bilingual Programme if he/she is joining Years 1 – 4 (ages 10 – 14). If your child is joining years 5 – 8 (ages 14 – 18), he/she will join the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Years 5 and 6 (ages 14 – 16) form our “pre-IB Years” and Years 7 and 8 (ages 16 – 18) are the IB Diploma Programme itself.
What are the criteria for admission to the Bilingual Programme?
Pupils must be resident in Klosterneuburg and pass a written and oral admissions test. 50 pupils are accepted into Year 1 of the Programme per year, based on residency in Klosterneuburg, the results of the tests and on their primary school grades.
If your child is applying to the Bilingual Programme for any other year, or to the IB Programme, an individual date for testing will be arranged. A place in the Programme will be allocated based on: the availability of places, residency in Klosterneuburg, your child’s academic record and the result of the entrance assessment.
When does my child apply for the Bilingual Programme?
To join Year 1, your child needs to apply at the beginning of February, prior to starting in September. The exact dates are set by the Lower Austrian Education Board. They are therefore non-negotiable. The exact dates are posted in advance on the school website.
If your child is looking to join Years 2 – 8, a first enquiry should be made before December 31st.
My child wants to join the Bilingual Programme but currently speaks only German or English. Is this a problem?
If your child wants to join the Bilingual Programme in Year 1 and does not speak English, this is not a problem. Many of the Year 1 pupils join with minimal previous knowledge of English and the teaching is structured with this in mind. However, having no previous knowledge of German is problematic and we strongly advise any child not speaking German and wishing to apply for a place to undertake study of the language before joining. These cases will be discussed on an individual basis.
Does my child need to sit an admissions test?
Yes. If your child is applying to Year 1, the application needs to be in by mid-February (this date is set by the Lower Austrian Education Board and is non-negotiable). Your child will then be invited to sit a written and oral test during the month of March. The test can be done either in German or English, depending on which language the pupil has been educated in. 50 pupils are accepted into Year 1; acceptance into other years is only possible when there are free places.
For admissions into Years 2 – 8, an individual test date will be arranged.
Is there any specific preparation required for the admissions test into Year 1?
No. The test diagnoses ability in the child’s first language of instruction (German or English), creativity and logical thinking.
How much does the Bilingual Programme cost?
We are a non-fee-paying Austrian state school. The Bilingual Programme is supported by the Education Board of Lower Austria. To cover additional costs the Programme carries a contribution of €45 per month for each pupil. Admission to Year 1 carries a fee of €25. The more personalised admissions service required for entry to Years 2 – 8 carries a charge of 80€.
